Tech Time Podcast Episode 7 – Clouds of Bugs and Donairs

Tech Time Podcast Episode 7:

Gut-Brain Connection Could Lead To a ‘New Sense’

  • In our podcast a new study has revealed a “fast-acting neural circuit allowing gut cells to communicate with the brain in just seconds,” reports New Atlas. Diego Bohorquez, senior author of the study, says “these findings are going to be the biological basis of a new sense. One that serves as the entry point for how the brain knows when the stomach is full of food and calories.” He says it “brings legitimacy to [the] idea of the ‘gut feeling’ as a sixth sense.”
  • Duke university
  • Remarkable new work from a team of researchers at Duke University has now revealed a previously unknown direct circuit between the gut and the brain that could allow for fast sensory communication that doesn’t relay on laborious hormonal signaling.

Mosquitoes Genetically Modified To Crash Species That Spreads Malaria

  • For the first time, scientists have demonstrated that a controversial new kind of genetic engineering can rapidly spread a self-destructive genetic modification through a complex species.
  • The scientists used the revolutionary gene-editing tool known as CRISPR to engineer mosquitoes with a “gene drive,” which rapidly transmitted a sterilizing mutation through other members of the mosquito’s species
  • After mosquitoes carrying the mutation were released into cages filled with unmodified mosquitoes in a high-security basement laboratory in London, virtually all of the insects were wiped out, according to a report in Nature Biotechnology. The mosquitoes were created in the hopes of using them as a potent new weapon in the long, frustrating fight against malaria. Malaria remains one of the world’s deadliest diseases, killing more than 400,000 people every year, mostly children younger than 5 years old.
  • What’s encouraging is that the mosquitos reportedly did not appear to further mutate in a way that would diminish the effectiveness of the engineered mutation. “But the researchers stressed that many years of additional research are needed to further test the safety and effectiveness of the approach before anyone attempts to release these mosquitos or any other organisms created this way into the wild,
  • Matt – What effect would this have on the local ecology?  I hate mosquitos but would birds, bats and other predators starve? Would other insects move in to replace mosquitos?

Uber Drivers and Other Gig Economy Workers Are Earning Half What They Did Five Years Ago

  • According to a new study by the JPMorgan Chase Instittue, drivers who transport people via apps (e.g. Uber, Lyft, Uber Eats, Postmates) made 53 percent less in 2017 than they did in 2013.
  • drivers on average are working fewer hours; demand hasn’t increased to meet the increased number of drivers; trip prices have fallen; or platforms are paying drivers lower rates.
  • The average monthly payments to those who worked for a transportation app in a given month declined to $783 from $1,469. Meanwhile, people working for leasing apps — Airbnb, Turo, Parklee and other apps that let you rent assets like your home, car or parking space — saw their incomes from those platforms rise 69 percent to $1,736 on average.
  • Matt – Outdoorsy – I looked at renting my RV.  A friend of mine said he put his gas Class A on the site just before the May long weekend and had over $10k of bookings within a week.

Apple Completes Shazam Acquisition, Will Make App Ad-Free For Everyone

  • Apple has successfully completed its $400 million acquisition of Shazam, and the company announced it will be removing all ads from the app “soon.”
  • Shazam has been downloaded over 1 billion times around the world and is used over 20 million times every day

Implanted Device Helps Two People With Paralysis Walk Again
* NBC News: At least five people whose legs were completely paralyzed are walking again, two of them with no outside help, thanks to a specialized program of therapy and a pain stimulator implanted in their spines

  • It’s the latest and most dramatic advance in a new approach to treating spinal cord injuries developed at the University of Louisville in Kentucky
  • The reports show that electrical stimulation of the spine, when combined with a very intense and specialized training program, can re-educate the body and help move the legs even though signals from the brain are cut off. The stimulator is implanted into the epidural layer surrounding the spinal cord, and sends controlled signals into the bundle of nerve tissue.

SiriusXM Is Acquiring Pandora in $3.5 Billion Deal To Create the ‘World’s Largest Audio-Entertainment Company’

  • with more than $7 billion in projected revenue in 2018 and more than 100 million monthly listeners, combining SiriusXM’s 36 million subscribers and Pandora’s 70 million-plus monthly active users.

Streaming Accounts For 75 Percent of Music Industry Revenue In the US

The numbers also show that more people continue to join paid subscription services, with subscription rates growing by about one million per month. But while streaming revenue is still on an upward trend, the news isn’t so good for digital downloads and CD sales. Digital downloads have only made up 12 percent of overall revenue so far this year, down from 19 percent last year, and CD sales saw a whopping 41 percent drop in revenue. To compare, during the same time last year, CD sales were only down three percent from the year before. Vinyl revenue, however, is up 13 percent.

First Android phone launched 10 years ago

  • 10 years ago (Sep 24) the HTC Dream was released on T-Mobile.
    • The first phone with Android as an Operating System.
  • Had a screen that slid away to reveal a QWERTY Keyboard.
  • Competition in 2008 was Nokia/Symbian, Blackberry, Palm, Windows Mobile, Apple
  • In 10 years we now have Android Pie (API level 28).
  • 2 billion people are estimated to currently have an android device.
  • Android made its name through
    • being open sourced (fragmentation)
    • customizable (contrasted with Apple’s closed OS)
    • Google Apps integrated (Gmail, Google Maps, Chrome, Docs, Photos)

Pixel 3 Ultra & Leaks Explained…?

  • Brandon (This is Tech Today) and John Prosser (Front Page Tech) the VBloggers who was behind the Pixel 3 Ultra rumour explains the reasons behind the Pixel 3 XL leaks and the Pixel 3 Ultra rumour.
    • Received this information through an Engineer at Google after establishing security protocols.
  • Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL were not leaked on purpose.
    • They were allowed to continue to leak to find the culprit.
    • The leak happened at Foxcon where the LG screens are manufactured.
  • HTC was purchased by Google in January.
    • HTC is most likely the team designing the Pixel 4.
    • The Pixel 3 was designed by the old team (most likely their last).
      • Pixel 3 was already 4 months into development when HTC was purchased.
    • HTC has manufacturing power.
  • There is a 3rd device that the HTC team is working on.
    • It may be released in time for Christmas.
    • Possible working with Xiaomi

welcome back we’re here on our seventh
episode there’s a few things we wanted
to talk about before we get started if
you want to send us a message ask us to
talk about something you can send that
to our email address listed below as
well as our Twitter and if you’re
watching this on YouTube go ahead and
comment in the comment section and
alright then let’s get started how was
your weekend well it was really good I
actually just discovered there’s a
Korean market behind my house and yeah
yeah well good food it’s a meat market
so I went got bulgogi marinade sauce so
I’m gonna try that on my chicken today
to see if it tastes any good the stuff
in the store I don’t know it’s just okay
so we’ll see if this is a little more
authentic I live in kind of a Korean
hoping it’s good stuff how about you how
was your weekend oh it was great I took
the kids out to comic-con here in
Edmonton is actually called the Comic
Expo I guess there’s copyright issues
with calling it comic-con it was great
fun unfortunately a lot of the big stars
didn’t show up they canceled last minute
but we still had fun I was dressed up as
Captain Christopher Pike from Star Trek
and the kids all were there geekiest
shirts and we just had fun watching
people and trying to spot celebrities
and of course eating bad food and and
just getting our geek on it was awesome
so did your costume include a leotard no
I didn’t wear the leotard that’s the
next thing I have to buy but I had the
authentic original series shirt that
it’s the exact same color the same
fabric everything that was in the
original series so are you talking
Captain Kirk I miss twitchett captain
you said well Christopher Pike is before
Captain Kirk he was in the pilot in the
original series oh you know I did I said
I saw the first one it’s on Netflix I
think and I thought that’s strange that
isn’t the regular Captain Kirk I’m used
to well the reason why I chose
Christopher Pike is also in Star Trek
discovery season two he’s gonna be the
captain that shows up and starts
interacting with the discovery kind of
that bridging captain into the original
series since discovery takes place just
before it so fascinating stuff and of
course a few people did recognize me and
they said which captain are you so yeah
we got our geek on it
great at Miss Piggy and it’s a good way
to trying to explain the role switch
right freshman Sabella married to a new
person this is just weird
so to start out we’ve got some kind of
cool news I guess there’s a new
gut-brain connection that could lead to
a new sense so there’s a new study that
says that fast-acting neural circuit
allows gut cells to communicate with the
brain in seconds so if you’ve ever had
that gut feeling when you’ve gone
somewhere that something’s odd that
might actually be real apparently
they’ve figured out that the stomach in
the brain communicate a lot faster than
we think and this could actually be used
for a lot of really cool tech uses in
the future this was done out of Duke
University and it really is remarkable
work that they’re doing did you hear
anything about that no nothing at all
I’m just curious I mean I think it’s
great it’s a it’s our six senses I got a
bad gut feeling about this but what do
you think it could be used for
well I’m doing medical reasons I’m
hoping they’re going to be able to check
out the flora and your gut maybe they
could do tests where they use certain
dies they said that they actually used a
mouse and put a certain time at stomach
and found traces of it in the brain
literally milliseconds later perhaps we
could discover different ways to
diagnose and treat gut problems and I
think that’s just scratching the surface
so that I thought that was pretty cool
that is pretty neat another kind of neat
interesting thing going on is
genetically modifying mosquitoes so Matt
growing up in Canada we had a lot of
mosquitoes and a lot of people joke that
in Alberta is the provincial bird yes
and I remember one time I broke
down on the side of the road on baseline
road in Sherwood Park with mom and we
had to walk to the nearest gas station
and I remember there being thick black
clouds of mosquitoes and just running
and you can feel them filtering your
face as you ran through them if you
still have bad mosquitoes like that you
know what every year is different some
years there’s like flocks and hordes of
mosquitoes that will just descend upon
you and your children and just suck you
dry and then other years you hardly see
any it really depends on how wet the
summer is this summer wasn’t too bad but
I gotta tell you as an RV guy and I love
to take my motorhome out my biggest pet
peeve is mosquitoes and I just love
coming and visiting you down there in LA
because you don’t have the same mosquito
problem we do and you know just that
feeling of walking around in the dark at
I’m always cringing because in Tanana
you’re that’s mosquito season like you
just head for home don’t hang out at
night when the sun’s going down because
well this is really cool they actually
genetically modified the species using a
CRISPR technique and what they did was
they were able to make hordes of these
mosquitoes become infertile and so they
weren’t able to reproduce and it really
brought down the amount of mosquitoes in
the next batch for the next year so it’s
exciting but there’s some negative
consequences potentially I mean what
eats mosquitoes right I mean are we
gonna destroy a food chain there what
are you thinking yeah well that’s that
was my thought when you sent me the link
and I started reading about this so
first of all I think it’s great I don’t
know from mosquitoes have any benefit to
ecology other than feeding birds and
bats and other predators and I hope that
if we do decide to eradicate mosquitoes
I mean though prevent malaria and other
diseases get
get sent around in mosquitos what was
that one that was causing birth defects
a while ago yeah I know what you’re
talking about it’s all in Brazil and and
yeah I mean those types of things could
be eradicated and hopefully there’ll be
more less blood sucking bugs that will
sort of fill the neeshub mosquitos but
it does make me wonder a little bit what
would be the effects of eradicating this
past so how many people do you think
died a year from malaria I wouldn’t even
begin to guess did you see any numbers
yeah almost half a million is what the
estimate is so 400,000 a year and most
of them are children under five years
old so I think it might be worth getting
rid of a batterer to to to save all
those people that are potentially
passing away from from the pass on
malaria the one thing I saw that was
fascinating about it is the way that
crispers was eradicating this mosquitoes
is it was sterilizing them it was
basically creating the next generation
after they reproduced sterile and so in
essentially one generation which is
literally days memories yeah the days
are weeks with mosquitoes right you’ve
wiped out that population so it’s fast
it’s it’s a little bit scary to think
that we have that kind of control but
we’ve been doing crispers for a while
now and we’ve been doing gene editing on
plants for a long time for example most
of the plants that we grow and eat are
genetically modified in some way or
another either to be robust and and
prevent insects from eating them they
can handle Hardy or whether they can
grow a lot more wheat and a bushel and
these are great things that genetically
modifying is doing but also these
companies are protecting themselves by
making that generation of whatever is
being produced sterile so I can select
the seeds and
and do your own seating the next year
you want this fabulous new genetically
modified product and what you’re talking
about is quite controversial I know
people in Alberta love the canola plants
which i think is genetically modified a
GMO but you know when I was living in
Hawaii people hated GMOs and we would
constantly have people protesting in the
streets because yeah moustachio or
whatever it’s called that big company
that one said oh yes yeah they were
doing a bunch of testing out there in
Hawaii and so I think I find people that
are very Pro and I think the Pro points
you went over you know it’s more robust
bugs don’t eat it as much you get a
higher crop yield but then there are
some people that are a little bit leery
about eating a plant that’s not natural
and you know could it cause potential
side effects good companies go ahead and
copyright the the plants and say you’re
not allowed to grow this only we are and
would that create a monopoly there’s a
lot of pros and cons to those sides and
you know maybe with bugs and eliminating
mosquitoes we’d have certain
corporations and companies profiting off
of it and other farmers losing out I
don’t know there could be pros and cons
to it too let’s wait and see
so Dan here’s another interesting
article that you found and I’m curious
if you could just talk a little bit
about this
it’s just that side gig economy looks
like it’s not nearly as lucrative as it
was a year or two ago that’s right
you’re talking about Buber they did a
study where they took the average amount
that people earned in 2013 five years
ago and compared it to today and it’s
remarkably lower it’s 53% less this is
what the average uber driver is earning
this year as opposed to 2013 and there
could be several reasons for that it
might be that Buber drivers are working
less hours that demand hasn’t really
increased to meet the number of drivers
the prices have fallen there’s more
competition with lyft and other things
people are doing the scooters now are
they doing school
Simonton I haven’t seen any scooters no
they’re pretty cool when you come out
here to LA next time we’ll go to Santa
Monica yeah it’s full of people on
you know Millennials out everywhere
outside of their cars in the community
it’s fun to watch but that’s
controversial too a lot of people are
trying to get rid of them because
they’re living on the sidewalks well
everywhere you go there’s these scooters
that are electronic and people don’t put
them away nicely they just throw them on
people’s lawns they throw them on
business sidewalks and they’re just
literally everywhere I mean there’s a
new Segway you know remember what
everybody was whipping around on segways
now with scooters and well what you’re
saying is true I mean it’s a fad
obviously people love it and it’s funny
I just went to church this morning and
walked outside and there was you know
maybe 20 of these scattered right on
like near the lawn right in Monaca and
it’s just funny to see that but I mean
the positive things are people are out
in the community more I mean when you’re
behind a car in Los Angeles you don’t
talk to each other at least you can make
eye contact with people and it’s fun I
see people out on dates to people on a
scooter they’re going up and down the
path you know on the ark it’s a lot of
fun so I’ll have to show you that next
time you’re here that’d be great maybe
you can tweet out a picture of those so
to get back to the side gig and how it’s
being affected is the fact that it’s
harder to make money in a side gig
because prices are getting more
competitive is that better for the
consumer like myself if I wanted to go
get an uber am i seeing that the price
of an uber is dropping or is it really
just the amount of money that’s going
into the uber drivers pocket because
they’re getting less fares you know
perhaps but you’ll find what surge
pricing you know there’s times of the
day where it really is more expensive so
I don’t really know how much you’re
saving as a consumer it’s it’s
frustrating I mean the taxi drivers that
were here 20 years ago
have been working ever since some of
them have switched over to Ober and I
just feel like their paychecks keep
getting cut and I think maybe even in
the next five years we might see robots
take over and have self-driving Ebers
and so you know it really is frustrating
that you know the robots are coming for
our jobs and robots are coming it might
be good for the consumer in a way but I
think you’ll find that if you looked at
the data you’re probably spending just
as much as a consumer I don’t really
know how much you’re saving since 2013
so I think the big businesses are
probably winning here that’s my opinion
so I think it’s interesting just from
reading this article and your notes on
it it looks like it’s really because
this decline in them making money is
because there’s more and more people who
are driving for uber or lyft or some of
these other side gigs meanwhile you’ve
got a very fascinating note in here that
says leasing apps like Airbnb Turbo
partly outdoorsy where you can rent your
RV those seem to be on the move and on
the increase in fact the statistic you
have here it says 69 percent revenue has
increased by people posting things that
could be rented like that no numbers guy
yeah if you look at the numbers back in
2013 monthly on average people doing
Airbnb and other other things leasing
out their properties they would get 783
dollars a month and now it’s 1469 so
it’s you know it’s almost doubled and
Airbnb is huge here because people love
to come down here and experience the
sunshine and you know people are taking
more advantage of that with their
properties so that’s positive but I
think when it comes to over and other
ride-sharing apps things are just going
down it seems to me that it’s the
service industry that first had this
spike in popularity like uber and lyft
and we also have skipped the dishes as
another side hustle you can have so is
that like uber it’s ER
yeah it’s like uber eats it maybe a
Canadian thing but basically restaurants
that normally don’t deliver you can go
through skip the dishes and they’ll have
a minor fee to deliver you food I used
it all the time when I was working out
at an industrial site during night shift
and I wanted to feed a bunch of angry
construction workers and so it’s like Oh
donators for everybody so that everybody
knows that Donaire is actually a year
amazing it’s got this white sauce that’s
made out of sweetened condensed milk
it’s not available in the United States
the second you go to Canada get off the
plane and get it on there ask you to go
there yeah sweet white sauce you’ll be
in heaven
so anyways they I use skip the dishes
ooh it would be exactly like uber eats
so that’s the service industry and it
looks like it’s spiked and now a lot of
people are into the service industry and
it’s harder to make money meanwhile on
the rental industry Airbnb partly Turo
and the one I want to talk about is
outdoorsy that seems to be on the rise
as more and more consumers are
comfortable with using these apps I
think that actually lyft and uber paved
the way once people got in there first
uber and realized this isn’t a scary
person who just signed up and is trying
to make some money it might murder me
right which does happen like we talked
about last week it does happen but it
looks like people are becoming more
comfortable and starting to trust these
services for example outdoorsy is an app
that I’m looking at using next summer I
have a motor home that sits and doesn’t
get used all the time and I’d like to
make some money off it and on outdoorsy
people can rent my classe which is a big
bus and it’s a diesel pusher now I’ve
got a friend who has a gas class eight
lights a bus not nearly as nice as mine
and he listed it just before the May
long weekend this de spring
and he said within a week he had over
$10,000 worth of people booking his RV
and I thought 10,000 you know just think
of the amount of money you could make
how many people have trailers or
motorhomes just sitting in storage or in
their backyards that could be out making
them money so perhaps we’ll see this
spike as we talked about with the
service industry and maybe we’ll see a
drop-off as more and more people get
into things like Airbnb and Turo and
outdoorsy but still it’s an opportunity
to make some money on the side
that’s not really exciting also for our
American listeners the main long weekend
is Memorial Day a lot of people know
that is I’ve tried that a few times it
is the next thing I want to talk about
is that Apple actually just bought
Shazam do you ever use Suzanne I choose
them all the time
so I remember when Suzanne first came
out and I tried to show some friends how
cool it was it’s the app where you stick
it next to a speaker and within a few
seconds it knows what the song is and I
had a lot of friends push back at first
and say why would I do that I can just
hear the words in the song and then type
it in a Google search well you know
there’s some times where you can’t
understand what it is or maybe you’re
listening to a song that’s just a beat
so it’s been quite popular and I think
it’s actually driven the sales for a lot
of streaming downloads and it’s been
quite profitable and I think that’s one
of the reasons why Apple wants to own it
now they claim that they’re gonna take
away the advertisements for it and they
actually spend 400 million dollars on it
now here are some of these numbers I’m
kind of a numbers person so did you know
that Shazam has been downloaded over 1
billion times I mean I see people even
live on the earth 7 8 billion by that’s
1 7 that’s insane right that 1/7 of the
people of the earth have it and they say
that it’s used over 20 million times a
and so if you take the population of
like the Southern California that’s
everyone here using it once a day that’s
insane yeah it’s absolutely insane to
think how many people use it I love
using Shazam I even had the the little
the app on my phone where I could just
push it and and oh here’s the song and
then I could click on it I get
downloaded from iTunes I could watch it
on YouTube I mean all these things were
a fantastic way to get this music onto
my phone so I think that’s why Apple
says we don’t need advertising Shazam
needed the advertising and it considered
itself a little bit of a radio player
I’m guessing and that’s why advertising
naturally fit in with the Shazam model
however apples gonna benefit hugely I’m
sure it’s already benefited hugely by
having people Shazam and then instantly
going to buy like what does this mean
that people that aren’t Apple will have
a harder time recognizing songs is this
mean Samsung phones or you know other
kinds of Android tablets maybe wouldn’t
have the opportunity I’m sure they’ll
still be able to download Shazam but so
to get to your question I’m a little bit
concerned about that as well
I don’t think it will be harder to
Shazam a song and know what the song is
or even have access to its lyrics and
all the fun things that Shazam is known
for but what I’m concerned about is it
may not be as simple to go to youtube
and say I want to watch the video of
this in youtube so that’s what my
concern is I think they may try to push
Google and YouTube out by making it more
of an apple centric service interesting
one other cool article that I wanted to
talk about before we get into the geeky
stuff is did you hear that they actually
have an implant that has helped to
people with paralysis walk again so this
is pretty cool this is based out of I
believe it’s Tennessee so in NBC News
that at least five people whose legs
were completely paralyzed are walking
again two of them with no outside health
thanks to a specialized program of
therapy and a pain stimulator implanted
in their spines um so this is kind of a
big dream right to help people that are
paralyzed walk again and we’ve seen a
lot of things like exoskeletons we’ve
seen you know muscle stimulation but I
think this is really exciting this is a
cool advancement it’s the latest in most
dramatic advancement in the approach to
treating spinal cord injuries and yes
aluminum University of Louisville in
Kentucky actually that that is working
on that I look forward to seeing a
little bit more about that I’ve seen
exoskeletons used for people with spinal
injuries I think that the sky’s the
limit with what they can do
I mean cyberpunk is coming usually what
we see in science fiction from 20-30
years ago are a reality today I mean
Captain Kirk had an iPad so we’re going
to see similar things happen I think
this is even greater than the
exoskeleton because you’re actually
doing some repair to those those nerves
I look forward to seeing what happens I
also wanted to talk really quickly about
Sirius XM acquiring Pandora three point
five billion dollar deal recently that
happened and this is creating the
world’s largest audio entertainment
company now when I read this I was
fascinated because number one as a
millennial I don’t use Pandora and
number two as a millennial I don’t use
Sirius XM I’m on Spotify amount Apple
music I’m on YouTube those things they
seem kind of like people use them 10 15
years ago do you know a lot of people
that use Sirius XM in their car still or
no actually I don’t
and if I do it’s usually a free service
that comes with the car
they have it for a year the only people
I know that used to subscribe to Sirius
XM were people who worked out in the
bush out in the boonies didn’t have
access to regular radio so if you’re way
up in the Northwest Territories
underneath the Arctic Circle they’re
perfect you can get radio and you can
listen to Howard Stern in a way you go
but I said you can really get serious XM
up in the Northwest Territories oh yeah
yeah because it’s satellite based so I
think that there will always be a market
for satellite based radio you know and
perhaps it will grow in areas like the
second world instead of the first world
places where people are becoming more
affluent but maybe they don’t have
access to radio and Internet like we
have here however I absolutely agree
with your insight as to Millennials and
even myself I’m a generation Xer and I
don’t listen to regular radio I don’t
watch regular TV I use streaming
services like Netflix and I would use
Hulu if we could get it here in Canada
because I sure don’t know we actually
can’t even get Pandora here but I use
Spotify and I’m seriously thinking about
going to youtube music because I am an
Android person and a Google user and
that’s just one more service that falls
underneath the umbrella of Google and so
to me that just seems like a no-brainer
to just migrate that way but I think
you’re right this could be a bad buy but
I think Sirius XM realized that on the
way out they’re seeing a drop in
subscribers they see the Internet as the
savings to their to making money and
this is something that they could afford
seven billion is a lot of money
wait a minute 3.5 billion is good
Towson’s yeah chump change right
but that being said I I think that it’s
it’s they’re betting on the wrong horse
now what’s interesting to get into that
streaming media business there’s another
article here that you posted that says
streaming accounts for 75% of music
industry revenue now that’s in the US
alone but that’s huge then I think that
really shows they’re betting on the
wrong horse by going with radio based
listening to music so Pandora although
when it first came out was neat because
it would say oh you like this song and
here’s a radio station I’ve created
well Spotify does that and Spotify makes
recommendations and says hey I think
you’re gonna like Swedish country music
and I was like Swedish country music I
don’t think so and then I listened to it
and I was like this is great this is not
ABBA meets Willie Nelson like it’s it’s
alternative it’s cool and guess who knew
I would like it Spotify
really oh yeah okay you know one of the
most fascinating things in this article
about the streaming music is that did
you know that vinyl is 13% of the sales
now and that’s almost as much as CDs or
more that’s insane right I have a few
friends that listen only to vinyl and
you know it’s kind of a thing where you
go into their house and they have the
vinyl on yeah do people do that up there
oh sure I mean it’s an audiophile thing
and it’s it’s retro and it’s kind of
cool it’s kind of a hipster and maybe
the sound is a little bit better but
really CDs are retro too so to be able
to say he knows CDs or 12% they used to
be a hundred or or 95 percent and to say
vinyl is 13 it used to be a hundred
right until cassette tapes came out so I
still see yeah vinyls increasing because
of its audiophile appeal
it’s retro appeal but it’s not gonna
grow much more than that it’s not gonna
take over the music industry we are
going digital and I think what we’re
gonna see in the future is streaming
apps that are going to get their packets
of music in better quality smaller
chunks so we’re not using all of our
data and when 5g networks come out it’s
just gonna be that much easier to stream
that’s true you know I have a funny
story yesterday a patient was telling me
she wanted to get me this DVD for me to
watch yeah and you know there I guess
there’s this DVD store somewhere in Los
Angeles about she was gonna get it for
me and I told her I don’t have a DVD
player I mean what have you have your
playstation before I don’t have a
Playstation yeah literally my laptop
doesn’t have a DVD player my Roku
doesn’t I mean I couldn’t play it if I
tried so it’s interesting how we’re all
shifting away from physical media and
now you know that streaming music is 75%
that’s fascinating now you had some
articles about Android I can’t believe
it’s been 10 years than it’s been out
yeah actually so yesterday was the 10
year anniversary of when Android made
its first debut on t-mobile actually so
t-mobile had a phone called the g1 which
was also known as the HTC dream so HTC
was the manufacturer and Android was the
OS that was on it and if you see
pictures of this phone I should tweet it
out but it it looks like a really thick
and chunky blackberry that’s all screen
and then you can slide the screen out
and there was a QWERTY keyboard
underneath the screen and I remember
seeing this phone come out and I
remember thinking that’s awesome now at
the time I was a Palm Pilot user and I
had actually just migrated from palm
into Windows OS and I was into these
Windows phones and then to see a screen
slide and have a blackberry type quarter
QWERTY keyboard it was amazing I
remember thinking this is the future
is so cool and also Android started
putting cameras on the front of their
phones not necessarily on the HTC dream
but it was like wow we can get video
cameras now that’s science fiction
that’s crazy and it’s gonna be in my
cell phone
so Android change things now you could
argue Apple actually started to change
and I would agree with you
Apple put the internet in your pocket
that’s what made Apple cooler than
blackberry and cooler than Windows OS
because you actually had the internet in
your pocket it was much better than the
browser’s that the other phones gave you
but Android brought customisation it
brought the Google apps were all
integrated so you have Gmail Google Maps
then later came chrome Docs and photos
and so that’s all totally integrated
into Android so what I like about
Android is how much more customizable it
is you can do a lot more with it you can
tweak it a lot more it’s easier to you
know get under the hood and do things
you want to do with my iPhone I’m
basically stuck with the way it is and I
think it’s a great model but you know I
went to Android for three years you
remember that when I switched over and I
really enjoyed being able to do whatever
I wanted you know live backgrounds I was
able to change and tweak things for my
apps that I was developing it was just a
whole lot easier
yeah so it is it’s great it’s
customizable I really enjoy Android but
now the elephant in the room is the the
many different fractured types of phones
out there right you cannot make Android
as smooth and as seamless as what you
get with the iOS experience and iPhone
because the software is made to work
directly with the hardware so it’s still
great interesting to see so more numbers
so nowadays there are 2 billion people
they’re using an Android device today so
those good memory so anyways it’s
fascinating to see where we’ve come so
to go along with that some other
interesting things in the phone news
this last week we’ve been talking about
the conspiracy theories about the pixel
3 and the leaks that have been happening
with it have they been intentional and
then there was rumors about the pixel 3
ultra another phone that would not have
this terrible ugly notch and so we
finally got some answers this week and
the the answers came from two video
bloggers so the first is Brandon from
this tech today and the one that made it
really famous is John Prosser from
front-page tech and basically they were
the ones talking about these rumors and
and really spreading it and they said
they finally got to talk to an engineer
that works for Google and is actually on
the team for designing the pixel 3 well
first they had to lock down all these
security protocols you know using VPNs
and any messaging we do has to be on an
app that will delete everything within a
few seconds so that there was really no
trace but they said the leaks were not
intentional we thought they were you and
I talked about it as a way to drum up
buzz but it turns out that the leaks
were not intentional it came from Fox
Khan’s Factory in China where they
install the lg screens and that that’s
where some of the prototypes or a bunch
of prototypes were stolen and so that
the leaks happened but then Google
didn’t try to stop the leaks they
actually allowed leaks to continue to
happen so that they could find who is
the source of the leaks and fried or
topples so according to their inside
source they weren’t on purpose but then
they didn’t try to stop it but
unfortunately that means that
it’s gonna have a beastly notch at the
top right it’s not gonna be notice so to
get to the pixel 3 ultra which is this
bezel list notch list foam that we’re
all hoping was gonna show up and save
the pixel brand doesn’t look like it’s
coming so if you remember back in
Google purchased HTC and it purchased
their phone design team and so now
essentially they had two teams they had
the original pixel team and then they
have this HTC team and and the original
pixel 3 team so when they purchased it
the pixel 3 team was already four months
into development and you can’t just
bring a whole new team with all their
tools and all their equipment into the
lab and say use these guys so basically
what they did is they said according to
this inside source
HTC team with all the bells and whistles
and cool equipment you’re now working on
the pixel 4 which is coming out next
year current team you continue with the
pixel 3 and pixel 3 XL and if people
aren’t gonna like it it won’t matter
because you’re done when this is over
anyways interesting so apparently this
engineer was on the pixel 3 team doesn’t
expect to stick around for the pixel 4
looks like he’s already been replaced by
this new team that was purchased with
HTC so I guess we’ll we’ll look forward
to see what happens that is really
interesting now we’ve gotta go but

Tech Time Episode 6 – iPhone XS, XR, XMax and Lard Sandwiches

iPhone Xs, Xs Max, Xr,

Price! Up to $1,500 USD ($2k CAD). This is crazy.
Tim Cook Defended the Price of the Xs Max by saying, “most people make a deal with their phone carrier and pay about $30 a month for the phone. That’s only $1 a day.”
What do you think? Is it really just $1 a day? If you keep the phone for two years, isn’t it $3.70 a day.
Apple Watch Series 4
$399 – ???
Larger screen, smaller bezels, new UI
Battery extended to 18 hrs – Is this enough?
Do you need 24 hrs? I often find myself traveling.
Easy to charge a phone but a watch….?

Trump Tariffs on China Exclude Apple & Components that go in Apple Products.
Tim Cook suggested that Apple may be too big to tax.
“I don’t want to speak for [the Trump administration], but I think they looked at this and said that it’s not really great for the United States to put a tariff on those types of products,”
After Trump’s Tax cuts Apple’s US back taxes dropped from $78B to $39B; almost on par to Ireland’s taxes where Apple currently is “Headquartered”.
Trump went after Apple about it’s Ireland Headquarters but he appears to happy as Apple announced earlier this year that they were moving their money back to the US (thanks to the Tax Cuts).

Google Remotely Changed Settings on Android Pie Phones.
Google accidentally changed the settings on Android Phones with Android Pie.
They switched on the feature “Battery Saver”.
Went to Reddit to apologize and explain.
“an internal experiment to test battery saving features that was mistakenly rolled out to more users than intended… We have now rolled battery saver settings back to default. Please configure to your liking”.
What do you think of major Corporations having the power to remotely change the settings on your phone?
Not new, Apple has done this with slowing down phones.

Security Experts are Warning Android Users of Fake Apps (Fortnite to blame).
Top10VPN commissioned a study of the most common Malware found on Android devices.
Google play is cracking down on apps to their store (tetris)
Found the malware is coming mostly from Digital Marketplaces outside of Google’s Play Store such as Amazon.
Majority of these Apps are tied to Fortnight which choose to sell it’s app outside of Google’s Play Store to avoid paying Google fees.
These Apps were found to have the ability to spy on the users by turning on their cameras & microphones, record and upload phone calls, reading their contacts & accessing their files, photos and emails.
Dan – As a developer of mobile games, do you feel Apple’s and Google’s store are worth the fees or is Fortnight correct by avoiding them?

Online divorce service says ‘Fortnite addiction’ cited in 200 divorces (lol)
Data mining of divorce hearings show that Fortnite is being increasingly referenced.
Digital addiction is now being added to the three most common causes of divorce (addiction to drugs, alcohol & gambling).

Google Accused of Political Censorship after Pulling Videos of Putin’s Biggest Critic.
Advertisements of Alexei Navalny were taken down at the request of the Russian Government.
Navalny was calling for demonstrations on Sunday to protest the raising of the Russian retirement age (Women to 60 and men to 65; life expectancy is 71).
In Russia it is illegal to campaign more than 24 hours before an election (election was Sunday).
Russian Government considered the Youtube Ads to be campaigning.
Navalny called it “getting the message out for a demonstration”.
Google sided with the Russian Government.
What do you think? Was Google right to side with the Government’s claim it was campaigning or was it political censorship?

welcome back we are now on Episode six I
can’t believe we’ve made it this far are
you doing that I’m doing pretty good
yeah so six this is good we’ve made it
past the average number of podcasts when
they stop it’s five all right so how’s
it going Kenneth are you guys freezing
you know what has been really cold we’ve
had snow on the ground I’ve been
traveling for work and last week I went
to Fort McMurray and it was nicer in
northeastern Alberta than it was an
Edmonton yeah we’ve had this Arctic
front that came down from the Yukon it
dropped into northern BC and then just
shuffled out east towards us so it looks
like we’re gonna be out of it soon but
welcome to Canada September and freezing
cold well I’ll tell you today I had a
pretty good time I actually went to a
lake in Hollywood I don’t know if you
know this but over by the Hollywood sign
there’s a giant lake only eight people
have a house around and they have a
hiking trail so I went into that and
there’s a suicide house there that’s
really interesting what’s the scene it’s
this old Japanese house that has you
know kind of that really cool tile on
the top and it overlooks the lake and
the Hollywood sign and the last person
that owned it committed suicide and so
it’s been on the market now for two
years nobody will buy it and then we
found us we found out from a neighbor
that the people before that committed
suicide and the people before that as
well as those three people in a row they
didn’t know each other they were all
owners of the property killed themselves
in the house like within the last 20
years so that they’re not burial ground
poltergeist was filmed here in the
valley so maybe there you go
but I’m jet technology man we have a lot
to talk about the new iPhone XS and XS
matter tenants
sorry that’s right yeah it is the 10
look at me I sound like I’m 5 years
behind but holy cow that price is crazy
I heard for the best one for the max
that’s gonna be like $1500 American
right what is that equal in canadian
dollars it is one dollar shy of 2,000
bucks it’s almost like Apple chose to be
just under that like 1999 Canadian
dollars that’s just crazy Dan so you’re
gonna spend $2,000 for a phone not me no
that’s like tuition for one semester at
a university in Canada right it’s a
little bit more expensive now but yeah I
mean that’s a lot of money and you know
like how much did you pay for your
computer for your MacBook I need some
that flip that into a phone I feel like
that’s that’s just too much but what’s
interesting is Tim Cook started
defending himself the the day after they
announced the 10s max and this is what
he says he says most people will make a
deal with their phone carrier and he
figures that you pay about $30 a month
to your phone carrier for the price of
the phone and then on top of that
they’ll add whatever services you’re
buying from them and he says that’s only
one dollar a day now I don’t know how
how team cook does math but I broke it
down I thought the average person keeps
their phone for two years
and I personally keep it a little bit
longer but I think it’s probably two
years and when I did the math 1,500
bucks comes out to about three dollars
and 70 cents a day that’s insane that’s
like a McDonald’s meal every day just
for your phone right
or super grande I just drink water I’m
just gonna say no that is really
expensive and if you think about it it’s
a lot like leasing a car right like it
seems like oh I’m gonna have this
Mercedes and it’s only $300 a month
well it’s not really yours right I mean
you drive it off a lot it’s really
you’re renting the car from the car
company and you can’t do over a certain
number of miles and it’s it’s terrible
you’re getting fleeced right so just
like this with the phones you think it’s
yours you drop it in the toilet guess
what you know you’re out fifteen hundred
bucks unless you have AppleCare hey
they’re waterproof now so that’s good
but just thinking about leasing the
phone I mean that’s ridiculous maybe the
next step is a mortgage all right we
should take out 30-year mortgages maybe
they’ll let us fix the interest rate and
4.5% yeah $2,000 is a lot of money for a
phone especially because by the time you
pay it off in two years the next biggest
thing is going to come out you’re not
even gonna want it anymore so I agree
now Dan I know you love BSE and I saw
this coming the SE is dead the iPhone 6
and the 6s is gone the net is gone to
buy the 10 I think that was wise of them
because that’s what I was going to do I
don’t know about you but I like to buy
last year’s model for a cheaper discount
well guess what you can’t do that
anymore because it’s not there to buy
unless you go on eBay but you can’t buy
a new one from the source anymore and
that’s why they did the are the XR is
based or the 10r is basically our answer
to that so what do you think you’ve now
seen it you’ve seen videos you probably
haven’t held one but since your next
phones gonna be an Apple phone are you
happy with the form factor now you’re
gonna have to deal with the knotch
there’s no getting away from the notch
unless you buy a7 which I believe they
or maybe it’s the eight they’re still
selling so would you go with a
clunkier older phone that’s notch less
or a phone that’s the exact same height
and width but a little bit thinner and
way bigger screen real estate which but
you deal with the notch what do you
think oh man I’m gonna have to deal with
the knotch I’ll tell you what Matt two
days ago I was dealing with notch L
because I was trying to reprogram my
game my mobile game for the knotch
and I thought it would be easy I mean
I’m sure there’s a ton of developers
online that have run into the same
problem I have using unity and then
needing to do space at the top for a
notch so I thought it would be an easy
fix maybe a patch I could plug into
unity that’s the program I used to
program my games it took me six hours of
complicated math I was doing the
Pythagorean theorem because all the
screens are so different and it’s funny
one thing that we’re not talking about
is the aspect ratio of the 10 is
actually different it’s a little bit
skinnier than the other ones and so all
of my tiles for my game wouldn’t fit
properly on it not just a notch but just
the shape of it if you’ve noticed the
aspect ratio of the iPhones ever since
the the 5s it’s always been the same up
until the 10th and so everything’s
really changed am i frustrated yes would
I buy a new one of course of course
we’re gonna donate money were to the
cult of Apple I’ll tell you one thing I
would be interested in buying though is
that new Apple watch for 399 a little
bit bigger screen smaller bezel longer
battery life I think they look pretty
slick I like the idea of being up work
and just looking and glancing at my
watch and seeing a text met up being
defective by pulling out my phone I
think that would be needs you’ve got a
bit bit right are you pretty satisfied
with that
I do have a Fitbit um you know what I do
have a Fitbit I like what it does it’s
very simple I think it does an amazing
job with their software as far as the
health app side of things I also really
like the challenges that they have and a
lot of people I know have fitbit’s way
more people that I know have fitbit’s
than they have Apple watches but I gotta
tell you Dan I think the star of the
announcement that happened last Thursday
was the Apple watch series 4 I even and
I wouldn’t say I’m an apple hater but
I’m not an Apple lover like I used to be
I’m almost like that spurned lover that
now is kind of anti Apple if that watch
is hot I’m gonna tell you it’s beautiful
I love the screen on it I think it would
be great I also love how it’s got
speakers it’s now 50% louder than the
series 3 and it’s like a Dick Tracy
watch where you can now actually carry
on a conversation a phone conversation
on your watch without having to bring
your big giant 10s Mac’s phone with you
when you’re going to the gym or working
out however that being said I got a
question for you okay say the battery
life is even better and it’s now 18
hours Wow hours enough I mean as long as
you’re plugging it in every day right
yeah you got to plug it in every day and
here’s the problem with that though and
we could talk a lot about how to extend
battery life when you’ve got lithium ion
in your watch or your phone it’s
actually not healthy to leave your watch
or your phone plugged in once it’s fully
charged and if you’re gonna do that
you’re gonna plug it in overnight and of
course it’s gonna stay plugged in and so
you wake up and take it off so I think
that’s part of the reason why we replace
our phone so much at least for me and
we’ve talked about this in the past its
battery life now 18 hours I’d love to
see 24 i rare
stay up 18 hours but it’s not unheard of
24 is a little bit harder to do but if
you’re traveling if you’re flying across
to Europe or something like that you’re
gonna want something that’s got a little
bit more staying power than 18 hours my
Fitbit last four days now granted I
don’t have a beautiful color display
with Retina display on it or anything
like that but at least I can get four
days out of it and I don’t have to worry
and you can still get your text messages
with the two I do I get text messages I
get notifications and somebody’s calling
I can’t reply on my Fitbit I know the
Aria which is the the latest version
that came out and it’s it looks a lot
like the the old pebble watches because
they purchased pebble I think it’s a
great watch I probably think it’s one of
the better watches you can buy right now
as long as you’re okay with not having
GPS in it it’s a great price and of
course it’s got the Fitbit ecosystem but
Dan that Apple watch series 4 is a sexy
beast well I’d be my favorite story from
you about your Fitbit is that lady that
you know that lost like 50 pounds
because she was competing with you so
let’s say story about that and about how
she’d wake up yeah she’s a good friend
of mine and she was extremely
competitive and she did she lost a lot
of weight it wasn’t like she was
overweight to start with but she just
got trim and we would get in these
Fitbit competitions which I know you can
do with just about any kind of health
device and I would usually sync at the
end of the day and all my data would go
to the Fitbit servers and if it was 11
o’clock at night my phone would start
buzzing because my friend would get on
the treadmill at 11 o’clock just to beat
me that’s great well what’s all I like
about Fitbit those that you can do it
with your Android friends you can do it
with your iPhone friends I mean with the
Apple watch if you’ve got friends on it
it’s just in the Apple ecosystem right
absolutely.i I like that about Fitbit I
hope they can be competitive with Apple
I hope Android can be competitive with
Apple we have these new Qualcomm trips
that are coming out for Android wear and
if those chips don’t make great
I think Android wear it could be dead I
think Apple and Fitbit will grab just
about everything out there they can
Android wear is great from what I can
tell and what I’ve seen it’s just that
it’s got that Android problem of having
so many people making devices for it
that it’s hard to get the coverage the
advertising and I think they’re in
trouble unless these koala comm shifts
can make something special that can at
least match the iPhone series for in
specifications or give me a better
battery you can give me a battery that
will last two days and give me something
equivalent to the series three I’ll
choose that over a series four well it
wasn’t it interesting to find out that
Google was kind of backing off of making
even Android tablets for a while and we
thought forever that it was going to be
neck and neck between them and Apple and
they just said this isn’t profitable
anymore and they don’t really release
tablets anymore wonder if the same thing
is going to happen for the watch yeah
isn’t that interesting
because we used to have was it called
the Nexus phones and then their their
tablets and you know we thought they
were pretty good but then they just
backed off and the tablet has
disappeared in fact even Samsung doesn’t
release as regularly their tablets
I feel like tablets are dropping off I
don’t have any empirical data to back up
that statement right now maybe it’s
something we can follow up with next
week but it really looks like even iPads
are dropping off and apples not focusing
on them the attentions all on these
phones getting bigger so maybe these
phablets are replacing our iPads
exactly what’s happening I mean I I
really never understood the point of a
tablet unless you wanted to watch
Netflix on it you know I mean you can do
everything on your phone and if your
phone has a bigger screen why would you
want to pay for another device that just
gets old in two years and then you have
to replace again I’ve never understood
it yeah I remember when my phone was so
small an iPad was great I Wow look at
all this real estate and I was taking my
iPad to meetings so school board
meetings church meetings things that I
wanted to take notes on and it was like
a little computer well now we have
computers that are basically the size of
a tablet just like I have my windows
surface pro and now we have cell phones
they’re as big as a small tablet I think
as you mentioned I think the tablets
going out and including the iPad so
let’s talk a little bit more about some
news that came out today would you see
the tariffs that President Trump placed
on China
oh let me get political so yeah it
sounds like there are a ton of tariffs
but nothing on Apple how is that
yeah I find that fascinating so Donald
Trump announced 200 billion dollars of
more tariffs on China
but Apple products and the components
that go into them are going to be
excluded and I wondered for a little bit
why this love affair from President
Trump and Apple because Tim Cook’s
actually a well-known Democrat he is not
a Republican and I don’t think he’s
funded president Trump’s campaigns
anywhere in the past so why this special
favor for Apple well I started doing
some research and I was reminded of some
changes that happen just recently so
Apple had been technically headquartered
in Ireland and I think they technically
still are and Ireland has had very low
his business taxes and so it was a good
business move for Apple to be
headquartered in Ireland well president
Trump accused them of being non-american
for being this very American company but
yet headquartered in Ireland and so he
was calling out Apple and saying you’re
an American you’re unpatriotic what are
you doing in Europe and then on the tiny
little island and with the announcement
of the tax cuts that came into effect
earlier this year for businesses it
actually dropped the back taxes that
Apple would pay by 50% so that’s big
they went from owing 78 billion dollars
in back taxes to the American government
to 39 billion dollars and so it now
makes economic sense I think that’s
almost on par to what they were paying
in Ireland and for moving back to the
United States that says okay President
Trump I’m now an American and I’m proud
to be an American and they’re bringing
that money back to the US and so that
ingratiated apple into president Trump
and his administration’s graces and now
look at the break they’re getting huge
break big tax break do you think that’s
going to make them a lot more
competitive on the international stage
and is it fair right so President Trump
is all about renegotiating NAFTA and
trade deals all across the world and
he’s pushing hard and hitting companies
and countries I should say with tariffs
is it fair that his American company is
spared the same tariffs that he’s
placing on non-american companies what
do you think I do know that’s hard to
say I can tell you it’s exciting to go
to other countries and to see people
using American products like Apple
unlike the iPhone I don’t know if it is
fair and
the whole business tax thing I mean I
think it’s good in a way because it
makes it a lot more competitive to to do
business here in the states and I do see
a lot of people going overseas alive but
it’s at the same time you know I know my
taxes this year are going up because of
it really fill that gap they are yeah
and that’s all personal taxes guy
personal taxes are going up not by a lot
just by about $3,000 it’s complicated it
has to do with a change that they did
and the way that the property tax relief
works at the end of the year anyway I
calculated it out and with these tax
drops I’m actually paying 3,000 more so
that will go towards Apple’s pocket I
guess they’re the ones that are saving I
know what you could do with your $3,000
what’s that an iPhone 10s max and a
series for Apple watch it is a little
strange to put money in pockets of big
big businesses and take it away from
property taxes here in California but I
you know it’s if it helps the economy I
guess it’s good I’m pretty neutral on
that I don’t have any strong opinions
either way all right well let’s get some
more strong opinions and let’s get
political political okay that was bad
I’ve been trying to want to do that all
week so Google has gotten political with
Russia and what they’ve done is the
government of russia has asked them to
pull some videos of putin’s biggest
critic and they argued that they pulled
it because it’s campaigning there’s a
law in russia that says you’re not
allowed to campaign earlier than 24
hours before the election i guess that’s
to save on money and bothering people
with so much or perhaps to help that guy
who’s in charge right now but any case
it’s illegal and so the government of
russia claimed that their biggest
competitor this
was campaigning meanwhile the individual
his last name is novel Ani
he stated look I’m just doing these
YouTube advertisements trying to get
people out to protest against Putin’s
latest rising of retirement age he’s
raising women’s retirement age to 60
years old and men’s to 65 and that’s
pretty much on par with what we’re
seeing here in North America but keep in
mind life expectancy in Russia is still
only at 71 so yeah it’s significantly
lower so it’s kind of like saying okay
you’re not allowed to retire until
you’re at 90 percent of your life
expectancy so what do you think do you
think Google was right to side with the
government and say okay you know this
looks like he’s campaigning let’s pull
it or do you feel that with freedom of
speech you should be able to get on
YouTube and call on your supporters to
demonstrate an issue that you feel is
relevant absolutely I think you should
be able to call on supporters to help
you out it was fascinating Matt that
there are only up to 71 years old
yeah that’s terrifying is it just the
the labor that they do or is it the
types of food that they’re eating or the
lifestyle yes so I was surprised too I
actually thought it was more like 65 and
the reason why I thought it was 65 is
when I was living in Russia that’s
actually where it was in the mid 90s so
I did some research on it and you can
see a graph where they actually went to
their lowest since the 60s in the mid
90s understandably that was when the
government was collapsing and being
replaced over and over again it was a
very politically unstable time the Mafia
was running a lot of the show and I
could get in a lot of details of crazy
things I saw with mafia there but also
there is a very unhealthy lifestyle I
don’t know how many large sandwiches I
eat right like ecology it’s is
now I can’t even speak English it’s it’s
a delicacy that’s the English word I was
looking for right it’s it’s basically
meat jello with chunks of knuckle in it
I can’t be healthy so heart and stroke
issues are a big part of the life
expectancy in Russia there’s a lot of
heavy smoking if you look at the smoking
percentages in Russia versus the West
North America by far is actually ahead
of even Europe I’ll have to confirm that
by doing some research but just my
personal experience walking around
Europe versus North America we just
smoked less also vodka is a huge deal in
Russian culture in fact it’s how you
shake hands and do business you drink a
hundred milliliters of vodka to seal a
deal sure they’ll shake hands but when
you drink that 100 milliliters of vodka
you’ve agreed
that’s your stamp on the document so
with the way that alcohol is ingrained
in the culture and cigarettes and eating
a lot of fatty foods heart and strokes a
big issue so it’s great to hear that at
least they have some kind of a form of
Social Security though I wasn’t aware
that they did and so you’re saying that
that’s that’s what they’re waiting for
is is the payment from the government
right like you could just retire any
time if you wanted to if you’re rich
enough over there right so this is when
you could start collecting your pension
and that’s actually exactly what they
call it they don’t call it old-age it’s
actually just called pension and when
you retire you’re called a pension year
that’s the direct translation of what it
is and it’s a big deal because during
the Soviet era of course all pensioners
were taken care of and it was a much
earlier age I believe it was in your
early 50s men maybe 55 I’ll have to
double check that and then you could
collect your pension so it’s a
significant bump and of course the
Putin’s critics are trying to to rally
and cause them some issues to just talk
about Google real quick I know you have
back them up with Russia did you hear
about how they’re actually changing
settings remotely on people’s phones
without their permission yeah so this
has to do with Android PI and some
people still have it in beta some people
actually have the official rollout but
it looks like what Google was doing is
they were testing some settings and
accidentally released it to a lot of
people in fact they went to Reddit to
explain what happened and apologized and
this is what they say quote and internal
experiments to test battery saving
features that was mistakenly rolled out
to more users than intended we have now
rolled battery saver settings back to
please configure to your liking so your
battery saver came on but that can be
bad what if you rely on apps that are
shut down when battery saving gets set
on or and then that can affect you not
getting your notifications it could
affect your job
it could affect anything where you need
immediate communication but I guess the
bigger question is is that scary it is
that Google goons shut you down yeah if
they can change your settings on your
phone are they also looking at where you
what’s your texting to your friends I
mean no no evil oh right I forgot you
are you told you know how hoover has a
god mode right we’re at their company
they can look and see where all of the
uber drivers are where all of the their
patrons are and you know and they can do
that what if Google could do that and
just see where all has been doing the
same thing for years especially when
they’ve been throttling your speed to
save on battery life right it’s no
surprise that they
can do this is it scary sure are we
putting a lot of trust in these
companies that we’re giving them
thousands of dollars for phones
absolutely how do we feel about it if we
keep buying these devices I guess we’re
okay yeah I guess we’re slowly letting
them take over our privacy which kind of
bothers me honestly I’d like it to be a
hands-off approach I think once you’ve
purchased you their equipment I think
they should leave you alone well okay
this brings up the next topic and I’m
really curious to what you think about
this as an app developer so a lot of
companies are trying to get away from
that ecosystem that both Apple and
Google have created specifically around
their stores and fortnight’s
specifically was the big one in the
press this last month where they chose
not to put Fortnite on Google Play and
instead you have to go to their servers
and download it directly from them and
then that way they don’t have to pay
Google the extra fees that they normally
would have to unfortunately they’re
stuck with Apple because Apple has a
much more enclosed ecosystem and you
can’t really get around it but I’m sure
they would have done the same thing with
Apple if it was an option yeah okay
first of all the Google Play Store is
getting a lot more intense just the
other day I was submitting an
application to it and they had someone
actually go through my game screen by
screen and they wrote me an email and
said you need to change this this and
this and I’ve never had that come back
from Google before so I like that
feedback I I didn’t like the feedback
most of it had to do with their privacy
policies and other things and they had
some other things they wanted me to
change but I was just shocked there was
somebody in Mountain View that was going
through my app and had the time to take
a look at it so they really are upping
their security in the Google Play Store
just like Apple did years ago and so I’m
shocked that Andrew
it’s letting for tonight just install it
using their own ecosystem Oh apples not
I’m sorry Google Play yeah and that begs
the question well things like steam
suddenly get on our phones now without
having to go after an app store because
it really is a lot of money that you’re
giving these companies I believe it’s
like 30% of whatever they purchase right
now I do freemium things where I make a
game for free and then you can purchase
items in it but it’s still 30% goes to
them and so mostly I like to get my
revenue from advertising which still
gives a chunk to Google so either way
you can’t get away from it
but if I was a large corporation that
had created fortnight I mean they’re
gonna make a lot more money this way and
there’s a lot more Android users than
you’d think because a lot of people in
Korea play for tonight a lot of Android
users over there in that countries so I
think that was a smart business move on
their side and I think this is a
slippery slope for Google I think if
they don’t get in an elastomer
though this also brings up another issue
that was actually in the news this week
is some security experts are actually
quite concerned about people leaving
that safer ecosystem of Google Play to
go and get apps and I know on a
jailbroken phone and maybe you don’t
even need to jailbreak iPhones anymore
you can still go get apps okay so you
have to jailbreak which removes your
warranty but you can still go get apps
outside of that protected space so talk
to nvp n actually commissioned a study
about malware found on Android devices
and surprise fries most of the malware
that’s affecting devices right now are
tied to fortnight and yeah I mean in
fact that’s what they found in fact I
think I don’t think it was most I think
it was all the malware that’s causing
grief right now is people going looking
for for at night looking for fortnight
apps that can maybe give them an edge
the game and they’re downloading these
apps onto their phone and giving them
access to record and upload their phone
calls read their text messages read
their emails access their photos I mean
this is scary stuff I mean that’s
exactly what malware is there to do is
to steal your personal information and
then benefit from it by selling it or
blackmailing I mean it’s it’s scary
stuff well not just that but they could
also put a bit minor on your phone and
take away all of your processing speed
and just you know mind their own
bitcoins while you’re trying to use your
phone and you’d have no idea why it’s
going so slow and your data goes through
the roof you have that protected
ecosystem I remember even when we had
Windows 95 windows 3.1 and you know all
the time people at school were telling
me hey Dan can you come over and fix my
computer because I have a virus and so I
would constantly be formatting people’s
hard drives and reinstalling Windows I
mean that was a big problem in the late
90s early 2000s you would have just
people coming up to me all the time and
asking me to do that the problem was all
the time they were downloading stuff but
they shouldn’t and it would install the
malware and it looks like we’re seeing
that again with bones this time I have
one more thing I wanted to bring up
about for tonight before we finish did
you hear about the divorce statistics
this is just an article I found that I
thought was hilarious and there was a
company that started mining data from
divorce courts and was looking at the
reasons why people are getting divorced
they found over 200 divorces within the
last year or so
blamed for tonight addiction as a reason
for divorce
it is hilarious I mean they specifically
said a game they didn’t say
Oh my spouse spends too much time
playing video games they said my spouse
spends too much time on fortnight so I
wonder how many of them were women maybe
2 out of 200 so this is interesting now
digital addiction is a real thing I mean
I hadn’t heard of fortnight being to
blame for in the past four divorces but
I actually do know people who have
gotten divorced over digital addiction
video games pornography these are things
that you can definitely be addicted to
on your technology and it’s now actually
been added digital addiction has been
added to the 3 so it’s now the four most
common causes of divorce so right up
there – addiction to drugs alcohol and
now it’s addicted to digital media
fascinating well that was a great

Didi halts carpooling across china after murder!

  • Didi Chuxing has suspended its Hitch carpooling service across all of China in the wake of a driver raping and killing a passenger on August 24th.
  • A customer had complained to Didi about the the driver’s sexually threatening behavior a day before, but the company didn’t follow through with an investigation that might have banned the driver in time to prevent the tragedy.
  • Apparently the drivers can rate the passengers (like nice legs etc…)
  • The article makes it sound like it’s a hitchhiking service more than an uber service.
  • A previous woman had complained to Didi on the 23rd that the same driver had exhibited extremely threatening behavior, including asking her to sit in the front, driving to an out-of-the-way area and following her for a while after she left the car. She’d complained to Didi, but the support agent attached to the case didn’t follow up within the company’s promised two-hour window. In other words, the absence of a swift ban against the driver may have cost a woman her life.

all right so we’re back for our fifth episode I can’t believe it five weeks right on Matt yeah they’re in Canada I’m not too bad we’re getting ready for a little bit of snow unfortunate yeah yeah it’s September 11 are your kids even back to school oh yeah yeah just to give you a little bit of context last year we were at 29 degrees Celsius so we were like high 80s and this year we’re gonna have snow tonight yeah there you go it’s not gonna last very much and it sounds like a lot of the snow is gonna be hitting Jasper but anyways that’s that’s the news here in Edmonton where winter is coming with a force and maybe where your groundhog you’re the anti groundhog where you tell you winter’s coming early that’s exciting more exciting news though is tomorrow at 10 a.m. Pacific they’re gonna release the the iPhone 10’s information so what I heard is that there might be three different phones have you heard about that yeah we talked a little bit about it a couple weeks ago with the leaks and of course all those leaks come from cases and some people who might have gotten their hands on them earlier so there’s there’s those three phones that everybody’s talking about the iPhone excess excess Max and X are so far they’re pretty big right yeah they’re really big and it sounds like these ones are actually gonna be even a little bit bigger so I like a good phablet in my hand I like a big screen you prefer the smaller 4-inch yeah so what do you think I think it’s gonna be really big I mean I like the iPhone 5 size slips in my pocket really easy I can go jogging with it around the Rose Bowl and it’s no big deal it doesn’t bounce around in my shorts but I feel like even the iPhone 10 would be too big for me to work out with right do you take yours to the gym oh yes yeah and it’s fine I mean it fits in my pocket but it barely and mine is the s9 plus so it’s pretty big but it seems to me that that’s the trend these days it’s a bigger screen bigger phone and apples definitely taping us there so my question to you is will you be disappointed if we don’t have a 4-inch se announce tomorrow I am gonna be disappointed that would be my next phone I don’t want anything bigger okay so I’ve noticed that the trend is that typically things get bigger and then they get smaller and then it goes back in that direction so I work with glasses all day and if you remember back in the 90s everyone was trying to rock the smallest pair of glasses they could they kept getting smaller and smaller yeah have you noticed that now glasses are getting bigger and bigger and bigger and it’s almost like sitting with your phone number zoo Lander let me hit the little tiny phone and goes I don’t know why people want that console junk in their pocket you know it seems really inconvenient but it’s the trend right now to have big everything big glasses big SUVs people want big phones and you know it might just be because the economy is but I mean maybe things were going smaller when it was more of a depression or a recession and be interesting to see if there’s any kind of a connection there and that’s funny personally I like a big screen I’m constantly using my phone for work and so if I need to pull up a drawing on the bigger screen that’s how I can see the detail that I need to get to so as a Productivity device bigger is better for me also on the entertainment side I also like bit bigger is better you know for games right or for watching movies or Netflix or more for watching movies and Netflix and I can only imagine trying to play a game like fortnight on a little tiny screen on a Nessy right that was really hard yeah it sounds like they have something called the the ten s max which is supposed to be the bigger of the phones right so they’re gonna have the 10 s that should be around the same size maybe a little bit bigger and then they’re gonna do the max which is for people like you that really like the big phones and I think this could be an opportunity for them to ask for even more money than $1,000 for a phone do you think they’ll keep it at $9.99 for the max or do you think that’ll be more expensive you know that’s the big debate historically apples always kind of kept the price the same now they’ve inched up more and more and more every year but traditionally they try especially on their laptops and there are other products they try to keep it at the same price point however I think that Apple’s realized that some of the people out there who are big fans will pay more for the most premium product so I would not be surprised if we see the iPhone access Mac’s coming in around 1100 just look at what the note 9 did with its highest end model right it’s yeah I think it’s around $1200 so if people are buying it now how many I don’t know but I I think Apple might go this direction I’ll tell you what if they do release that 10 R that’s supposed to be the budget one that’s made out of aluminum instead of stainless steel that’s the one I would buy i’m kind of cheap when it comes to stuff like this i mean it’s a phone you can drop it it can fall it can break the screen can shatter right I can’t imagine spending $1200 on something that temporary yeah I mean okay so that’s the better price and it that’s actually kind of the big buzz going on right now is we’re gonna get a cheaper iPhone that’s gonna look like the iPhone X and what you mean yeah okay that’s not super cheap because the se was how much how much I bought it for $189 boxes is out of my price range I think yeah so speaking of really big screens the pixel 3 XL has a little bit of controversy going on right now I mean that’s a really big screen with a really big notch and we’ve covered this earlier in the last couple of weeks talking about the knotch and how we don’t really like it that much well there have been a lot of bloggers especially video bloggers that have been giving negative reviews from some beliefs they’ve seen in fact we’ve seen an entire unboxing of the pixel 3 XL is that the same one they found on the ubered remember when you told that no this one’s actually coming out of the Ukraine well yeah it’s like a full unboxing and they turned it on there’s some controversy in whether this is real it could be a fake it could be some people think that there was actually some production units that ended up getting stolen and so they think that’s kind of where this came from but a lot of the video bloggers hate the knotch hate it hate it hate it one of them even said when I look at this I want to vomit all over it so here’s what the interesting thing is google has been contacting these bloggers with these extremely negative reviews and they said can I use the clips of you wanting to vomit on the phone in our our reveal why would they want to use negative press like them well that’s the question right that’s the question why are they doing this so now the conspiracy theorists are just going crazy especially these video bloggers I mean more and more people are clicking on their videos because they’re like hey Google just contacted me they want to use my vomit quote right so the theory is that Google might actually release another model that they’ve been to keep under wraps that’s going to be notch las’ and this would be their premium phone just like Apple tomorrow is going to release the iPhone 10’s max mm-hmm they might have a bezel s pixel three XL yet with no knotch so that’s kind of the rumored personally I don’t think it’s gonna happen I think it would have leaked by now I mean the technology yeah yeah what Elise didn’t you see the cases I mean there would have been something but I don’t know why Google’s gonna do it maybe this is all just made up maybe somebody started making contact and nothing is going to show I don’t know they already have a release date for that film the pixel 3 right isn’t it at the end of this month yeah it’s gonna be on October 4th actually so ok September but October 4th that’s that’s their big reveal just like Apple’s gonna have their big event tomorrow so by the time this comes out everybody’s probably gonna be logged on watching the Apple Keynote or going to the the blogs to see what’s being released I’m excited to find out what ends up happening you know I wanted to talk about this last week but we didn’t get a chance to did you hear about that murder in China with Didius carpooling app you know what I hadn’t until you talked to me about it so how did this happen and what’s different between say Diddy and uber so did is a lot like uber but in China one thing people say about it though is it’s more like a carpooling service so it sounds like if you’re on the way somewhere you can pick someone up and they can come with you anyways but either way their drivers are vetted according to and gadget the website I was reading about one thing they did say though is that this person that’s supposedly murdered their passenger had a complaint filed against them the day before he picked up a lady and she said he was really creepy he made her sit in the front seat kept commenting about her legs and then when she left and got out of the car he followed her for some time so he immediately called Diddy and said you know you really should look into this driver and the person she contacted on the phone didn’t do anything with it and the next day is when the girl died and so that’s their breasts yeah PR nightmare on their hand because they really should have done something had just been pretending they could have prevented it especially in that case and somebody had called the day before but you know even here in the United States should there be more done to bet new bird drivers it’s funny in my neighborhood sometimes I’ll do we’re cool you know to go to the airport or whatever and and sometimes parents just push their kids in with me and they don’t know who I am you know I don’t know the driver and are you serious I’m not kidding they just don’t want to drive the kids over to wherever they’re going and so I think in their mind they think because they have the app they can watch them go and then they probably call on the other side to make sure they make it there and I imagine that uber has a thing where you can’t be under 18 and use it but I’m sure it’s just the parents using their app and having the kids to be picked up it’s happened a couple of times while I’ve been in the backseat with their kids you know they don’t know me I’m not vetted so I I think they should really do something to to be a little more cautious about both the people that they’re carpooling with and the person driving for both Diddy and Peru burr yeah I mean what’s to prevent some creepy dude of saying you know what I’m good I’m gonna get out here with this kid right would you ever put your kids in an uber and just let them go well you know my kids are getting older I already put them on a bus that’s true you know what’s the difference between a bus and an uber other than at least a bus is a little bit more public right there’s several people on a bus somebody who’s going to be a witness but I don’t know it gives me the creeps a little bit it was unfortunate to hear that story it really is I in fact I’m kind of glad it didn’t catch on very much here in North America because I think it really would have affected Oberer and other ride-sharing programs and I actually support it I think it’s fantastic I think uber is a great platform I’m hoping as more competition comes that the price will get even lower than it already is and look at how they’ve shook up the taxi market yeah you know I’m really hoping that self-driving cars in the future I mean you could do ride-sharing there I really see a future where most people aren’t going to own a vehicle anymore and we look at the blogs that I’ve been reading say that uber is losing a lot of money right now paying all of their drivers and so really they’re not going to start getting a hit until they start having the self-driving cars so they’re had a loss right now apparently but I’m Roberto I mean it was unfortunate when I went to British Columbia a few weeks ago Vancouver no Ebers Vancouver Island no burrs you’ve got them in really yeah we do yeah we do have them here in Edmonton so it must be something with the municipality of the City of Vancouver is not allowing them to come probably because of a strong taxi Union that’s most likely it very interesting and speaking of international stories do you remember that crazy story with those Russian spies in the UK oh yeah so they’re actually I consider them assassins they were trying to kill mr. scribble what was his name Yuri I know his daughter’s name was Yulia anyways what was fascinating was how Britain now has been able to put together enough information to say look we know who the people were that attempted the murder and actually a death did result out of this and I’ll get into that a little bit later but they’ve been able to put it in front of the international community to say look Russia you had the motive here are the people and we’re quite certain that these are Russian spies how does it relate to technology so this is what’s fascinating about it I didn’t realize this about London but they have 25,000 CCTV cameras throughout London in fact they say four and six million of these cameras are throughout all of the United Kingdom so this is a real Big Brother issue here however in this case I kind of support it so imagine 25,000 cameras throughout London they found as they went through 250 police officers went through 11,000 hours of video footage they were able to walk back from the incident and trace these people that were suspects and followed them throughout the day and eventually get to the beginning of the incidents where these guys got off of a narrow float flight from Russia so this is how it goes March 2nd 3 p.m. a Gatwick Airport and an arrow flow flight arrives two guys get off they actually follow those guys to city centre by train so the train station has cameras they saw which train they got on they saw where they got off and then they watch them through the cameras go to their hotel so they knew exactly which hotel it was and then they could follow up with the owners and say ok what room were they in so March 3rd they then follow them through these cameras and they go to Salsbury which is the town where the attempted assassination took place where mr. scribble and his daughter lived they do what they think is a reconnaissance mission and then two hours later they return to their hotel March 4th they watch them go to the Train and they watch them get off the train in Salisbury in the town of mr. scruple live they watch them walk along the road towards his house now he didn’t have any cameras specifically showing them but now they know what they used was a perfume bottle and it was a modified perfume bottle with an extra long nozzle and they sprayed the nerve agents the Novacek nerve agent on the doorknob now that’s actually a proven assassination technique that Russia had experimented with in the 90s with this very same nerve agent and so just more evidence pointing to this issue came out of Russia and through their current spy agency they then catch them returning leaving directly from Salsbury going straight to Heathrow Airport and getting on a waiting flight so by the time mr. scruple and his daughter collapse on the bench in Salsbury they’re already on a plane flying to Russia so it’s amazing to me how they followed them with these camera systems from the time they enter to the time they exited now they didn’t have the technology to be able to prevent this and it was all after the fact but it was amazing to me after Russia has been denying denying denying and then this is laid out in front of us it’s very obvious to the rest of the world that look you can deny all you want but it’s pretty obvious these two guys are the guys who did it and they have the skills and the training that your government gives well that sounds like big brother to me I mean does that make you nervous that they’re watching them all the time or do you like it does it make you feel more safe you know what I kind of like it but then again I’m not the type of person that worries a lot about my own privacy however it is a little bit creepy to think that somebody could be watching us what I’m more concerned about our security issues with creepy people watching us I don’t care if the police watches me some people make Big Brother scares them what concerns me more is somebody hacking into that system mm-hmm and then watching there was an incident I think it was two or three years ago where there was an elementary school that had one of those cameras pointed at a boys and girls washroom so in elementary school and then somebody in Russia started live-blogging it so they had hacked in and then you could watch these elementary kids walk into the bathroom I mean how creepy is that really that concerns me far more than the police watching me because I personally don’t care they can watch me all they want and if they can stop somebody from getting me mugging me whatever I am that’s even better it’s the creeps it’s the it’s the other people that can hack into that system that has me concerned well then I guess when we give our credit card information out to stores I mean that’s trackable right and so that’s they can follow the money and now they can follow you on the street too so we’re already giving up a little bit of our sovereignty there you’d have to be cashless and drive cars and not take public transportation to be out of the limelight right you know some people do that some people truly do that they do go cashless they you store on their browser yeah they don’t own property right there they’re really trying to drop off but that’s such a minority of people I don’t think the average person gets that far but I think the average person would be concerned about a little bit concerned about Big Brother and really concerned about hackers and what they could be using that information for did I tell you and the listeners about when I was in Spain and they demanded to see my passport at every hotel why would you need my passport I mean I’ll show you my ID if you want me to and yeah they said that they have a registry in Europe where when you go to a hotel and it doesn’t matter if it’s a hostel or a hotel they have to register you in the database that says where you are every night and I asked one of the people at the hotel like have you ever seen anything go down he says yeah like one time there was some people that were trying to get away from the law and the police officer showed up two hours after I registered them into the database and so it’s a real thing over there it’s not just the UK that’s doing it it’s all of the European Union they’re following their their citizens and non-citizens you would think you would need a huge army of people to be able to handle that much data I mean you look at 250 police officers trying to track these two spies slash assassins down and 11 thousand hours of footage and they did it after the fact being able to zero in specifically on what they were looking for so it’s massive maybe this is the future of data is data management and being able to identify the important things up front and facial recognition to write an artificial intelligence that’ll help the police a lot I actually have an interesting story at what are the embassies I won’t say which country but here in Los Angeles I had a friend that was protesting there and they walked out and said even though we can’t do anything within the law to you I just want you to know that we sent your picture to our home country and you’re not allowed in it so be careful who you protest protest in your face might just be on their facial recognition so it’s interesting to watch different governments and how they’re choosing to to lead and I wonder what the United States and Canada will do if they’re watching us as well well look at the grassroots movement as well I mean it’s not just a government that can be doing that you have the white supremists marches that have been going on and then the the Facebook and social media shaming they came out of that where counter protesters are taking pictures with their phones of these people and putting it up on Facebook and saying do you know who this is and they were able to identify many of those people marching so I kind of support that too I mean there’s gonna be the grassroots monitoring where if we don’t have enough police being able to do this then you know maybe he comes down to a good old-fashioned grassroots lynching there’s no question that was outrageous in Virginia wasn’t it I’m having a hard time remembering where that was but that was well they’re being quite a few Washington DC had some as well since then definitely the white supremists have been feeling a lot more comfortable lately with the political landscape the way it is and comments about well there’s good and bad people in both groups right so these these groups are feeling a lot more bold than they have been in the past interestingly both sides now are covering up their faces even the counter protesters are covering their faces and I personally don’t know why I mean if I was there and I personally have a problem with white supremacy I wouldn’t care if everybody saw that I was there saying this is wrong but some are it makes me sad that it’s 2018 and we’re still going through that right oh it’s terrible there’s a couple more things that I wanted to talk about today did you hear about that leak in the space station so this has more to do with Russia yes yeah this is pretty cool what happened well not cool it’s it’s terrible so two weeks ago there was a leak in the Soyuz spacecraft which is Russian made and it connects up to the space station and this leak they thought was caused by a micro meteor that was flying through the air and and poked a little hole less than two millimeters which actually is a pretty big leak and if your oxygen is dependent on it and quickly going on you’re toast in his face like space is really really dangerous I don’t think people realize just that how insulated we are here on the earth and how it’s it’s perfect for us right you go to space and everything is going to kill you everything literally is going to kill you and so you get a little 2 millimeter leak and it’s it’s a big deal well they’ve now investigated this leak and it turns out it’s sabotage well forensics so they’ve looked at pictures and video of this and you can tell that somebody had taken a drill with an unsteady hand and try to drill a hole in the the wall of the soyuz spacecraft and you can actually see that it was sliding right so you know how sometimes you start to drill specially if it’s a strong metal the drill slides a little bit there so they’ve seen those slide marks they can tell it was an unsteady hand I mean obviously somebody was like trying to do with secret so anyways now Russian officials are saying oh well you know it it could have been done while this Soyuz spacecraft was being manufactured but we really think it’s somebody in space maybe they’re just freaking out maybe it’s a little bit of space madness right these people want to come home what’s the easiest way to come home create a little emergency in space so that’s the big question right now in the space station there’s three Americans two Russians and one German so who could it be I personally think it’s probably somebody down on the ground not somebody in space somebody who’s not happy with their employer I’ve seen sabotage I work in construction all the time there’s all kinds of people out there and they just do dumb things and in my opinion this is attempted murder right beside my channel if I’ve learned anything from all those space movies over the years it’s when you make a bullet hole or any hole in a spacecraft it explodes or implodes right space is gonna kill you dad it’s just gonna kill you well it’ll be interesting to see what they discover about that that’s interesting that you think it’s sabotage well to me it’s pretty obvious that it is sabotage the question is when so did it happen and did they launch with the hole or was it some astronaut floating with a little drill trying to drill a hole because they just won’t go home but personally these astronauts I think these astronauts are trained for such a long time they’re mentally prepared they’re ready to do this I don’t see it being an astronaut buckling I think somebody wanted to go home they would have to be requested to go home right as soon as the leak happened people that are getting antsy on earth here – wouldn’t you say Matt like Elon Musk getting crazy Wakita hot smoking and nice transition yeah so yeah this is probably one of the biggest stories of this week and you wouldn’t think it’s big so let’s just talk about the most recent event Elon Musk went on Joe Rogan’s podcast Joe Rogan was smoking something in Elon said hey what’s that you’re smoking is that a cigar and he says and other things something like the flames yeah and then he says would you like some and then Elon said is it legal here in California in other words he kind of knew that it was gonna be pot I mean if you smell it lit up you know what it is and joe says sure but if I hand it to you it may not be good for you you know stockholders right and was he right absolutely lon takes a toke and then they’re drinking whiskey and guess what happens to the stock price it drops 9 percent 9 percent 10 this is huge usually when you see stop crisis move it like a big move is 1.5 percent right 3 percent something catastrophic is happening Elon Musk smokes pot honor on a podcast 9 percent and to give you an idea of just how big this is we’ve seen Tesla’s stock teeter-totter through this whole year with his crazy behavior this though has wiped out any gains any gains Tesla stock has seen all year and that’s big because if you follow what the American tech industry has done they’re probably on an average around 10% which is huge huge huge huge the NASCAR was beating them all Tesla with beating them all wiped out nine percent gone and just a little bit of the teeter-totter that’s happening just last month it all kind of started with musk saying tweeting actually that he was going to take the company private and that he wanted to take a private at 422 dollars a share well all of a sudden that was a huge chunk 21% jump in one day boom and then of course that was the peak and then starts dropping especially as people were like who can afford to take this private and he wants a oh I’ve got some people wink wink wink and they’re like no no we need more than this and then the board is freaking out because Tesla’s board they seem to have not really been aware of this you know like Elon really is the head of his ship he’s the captain and the board is kind of along for this wild ride so the board assigned two full-time people to kind of take care of this like these are board members usually board members just sit back and give a little bit advice to full-time people were gonna help Elon identify a who it is that could take the private cuz obviously he wanted to and then he realized oh maybe it’s not best for Tesla as a company and then of course the stocks drop again and then there’s the paedophile accusations all that craziness that was the previous month and then he apologized so that was May he apologized in June and then he doubled down after he’s apologized he started saying well I think this guy really is a pedophile because if he wasn’t don’t you think he would have sued me well turns out he already had Elon didn’t know it maybe the stocks just up and down up and down up and down but I don’t get why don’t people just look at the quarterly reports you know look at how the company is doing and base buying the stock on that I mean why is it so flippant that but you know if an if a CEO takes a whiff of something suddenly it goes down 10% I don’t understand why people would pull well you know you’re right then and in a typical company that’s exactly what people do the problem is Tesla is a lot like Apple it’s all about reputation it’s all about the Riz McGill on musk and the brilliance of him we talked pretty viously about how he’s like a superhero to most people right and so you have this persona that really the stock price is so tied to and then that person has this erratic behavior and starts tweeting about his ambien addiction and is smoking pot and I mean and this is the guy who makes SpaceX Rockets right this guy launches rockets for the United States government in fact this the US Air Force is looking at removing his security clearance because they have a policy nobody with that level of security clearance is allowed to partake in marijuana even if it is legal in the state where they’re using it that’s how your yeah this is the United States Air Force it’s important that the people who are making these decisions are not skilled podcast for this we

all right welcome back this is our

podcast and we finally have professional

microphones and we also have videos so

you can see a speak in live

how’d your week go Matt it went pretty

good back at work and just trying to get

everything under control kids started

school again so that’s always exciting

did you do anything cool for Labor Day

uh no not really we just hung out at

home got ready for school cleaned up the

house a bit and that was it nice well I

went on a giant sand dune up in Malibu

and I rolled down it it was pretty

awesome I’ll post that on Instagram and

had a good time camping so it’s been

pretty good sounds awesome

well I hear there’s a lot to talk about

this week with technology did you hear

about that new fold-up Samsung phone

that they’re talking about yeah they’ve

been talking about her for a few years

Samsung has been playing around with the

technology teasing it a little bit here

and there but we haven’t seen an actual

working prototype I guess it was I think

it was yesterday or maybe even today

Samsung CEO JB Koh talked about

revealing the phone sometime this year

so it sounds like he’s given himself a

commitment of 2018 and and we should see

if people are expecting around November

when Samsung does their development

conference what do you think about a

fold-up phone would it be helpful well

you know I thought a lot about that and

I’ve been wondering like what would be

the difference because I have a tablet I

have a cell phone and it would be nice

to say well I’ve got both now but I

really don’t see what the functionality

difference would be and I think a lot of

people have mentioned that to Samsung in

fact code made this statement he says if

the unfolded experience is the same as

the tablet

why would consumers buy it so every

device every feature every innovation

should have a meaningful message to our

end customers so when the end customer

uses it they will think wow this is

reason why Samsung made it so I agree

with him I’d really like to see what is

the advantage of having a foldable phone

I think it’s cool I mean people might

like it personally I’m okay with just

slipping a candy bar phone in my pocket

that’s how they’ve been for the last ten

years kind of like a chocolate bar you

know yeah but it’s kind of fun that

they’re thinking outside of the box and

maybe they could put a screen on the

back side or maybe just make it more

innovative maybe you could write on one

part kind of like a notepad I’m not too

sure what their plans are but it’s

better than just doing the same thing

over and over again right yeah it seems

to me creative renders that people have

been doing based on rumors and usually

the renders look way cooler than what

the actual product looks like because

they’re just based on what they would

love to see not what they can

technically actually fit inside right

and it was really neat because on the

edges when it was folded the edges had

the date the time the weather and kind

of looked like a neat little clock that

was sitting next to your bed or on your

desk and then you open it up and you’ve

got full tablet capabilities I’m just

not sure I like how thin my phone is and

if I was to fold it in half like I don’t

know then it’s it’s bulkier in my pocket

right maybe we’ll go back to holsters

like we had back in the early 2000s

where we all kind of look like Batman

with one or two things hanging off of

our belts I’m looking forward to that

and I’ll start wearing a belt more often

I actually saw a commercial for a

foldable phone for Samsung about a year

ago it was the prototype yeah it had two

people in a bar you know this girl sits

next to this guy he pulls it out and

unfolds it what is that she says you

know yeah it’s really interested

everyone stops in the bar and looks over

so there’s definitely it’s definitely a

gimmick that’s for sure yeah so I heard

that Samsung’s rumored to be making a

phone with four cameras on the side how

many cameras does your phone have you’ve

got a Samsung right yeah mine’s got two

and I actually really like the

functionality of having two cameras

what Samsung lets you do at least with

the s9 Plus which is what I have is it

gives me two times optical zoom I know a

lot of the camera setups that have

multiple cameras out there for example

oneplus doesn’t give you the optical

zoom on the one plus six instead they

went with a different range of you I

think a wide angle lens I’d have to

double check that so some are going with

just black and white so that they can

get more detail there’s lots of

different experimentation with different

cameras so it makes me wonder why for

now do you think it could be 3d do they

want to do like things that pop out you

know like the red phone yeah I don’t

know I know red phone definitely is

going that way but I don’t really see

that as being something that people are

looking for and people are asking for

right now maybe extra zoom I think

that’d be fantastic because that’s been

my biggest complaint of using a camera

phone I mean the camera phone sensors

are amazing they’re great in low-light

they are getting more and more detail

man we’ve got twenty five megapixels 30

megapixel cameras coming in these phones

now but really you don’t have that zoom

unless you lose quality and you do at a

digital zoom and I know on the p20

that’s got three lenses and you can do a

three times zoom and it’s when I was

playing around with it was a big

difference and so for somebody who wants

to take photos with their phone and not

have to carry around anything else

perhaps that’s why they’re going with

four cameras that will give you a lot of

zoom that might give you some great

low-light may be a wide angle it would

be kind of like swapping out lenses on a

digital SLR but it’s right there

built-in deer phone there’s a lot of

people that really like to take close-up

photos photographers I think that would

be a really great option and that way

you don’t have to put a hunk and lens on

every single one of your phones right

those clip ons that you can get was

there a more convenient

I know you like the oneplus phones in

your family did you hear about the 60

yeah so there’s a rumor that came out I

believe it was just today maybe a landed

last night there’s a leaker he his name

is King star and he likes to post to a

website called slash leaks and he showed

the inside of a fox that will package

the oneplus 60 and it’s really neat

because it shows a teardrop notch so

it’s a very minimalist notch right in

the middle of the phone that would house

the selfie camera and then it also shows

an in screen fingerprint sensor so we’ve

known about the in screen and

fingerprint sensor for a while now we

knew it was gonna have a notch because

the six already has a notch but the tear

droppy it looks really nice it’s almost

like the notch isn’t there so if this is

real I think that would be fantastic it

would almost make me want to go grab a

oneplus again / Samsung now I know the

Samsung has 10 coming out next year

looks like it’s gonna have an in screen

fingerprint sensor and Samsung’s just

trying to get the soft or the hardware

fast enough so that it can be responsive

enough some of the phones that came out

with it right now out of China they’re

just slow you stick your finger on and

it slowly unlocked your phone as

compared to the ones that are on the

back of your phone that are lightning

fast well I want to talk about two

things first of all that teardrop

I like that they’re getting smaller

honestly I don’t like the look of the

iPhone 10 with that selfie camera on the

top I know a lot of people like the

I think it looks ridiculous I think it’s

2018 let’s figure out a way to put the

selfie camera behind the screen I know

it’s very difficult to do but I remember

when I first got my first iPhone the 3G

I remember booting it up and thinking it

was slow I knew back in 2008 that it was

too slow and yeah I knew that it had a

lot to improve on

that’s kind of how I feel about the

iPhone 10 I saw the notch and I just

felt like this isn’t a very well

polished product I can’t believe they

release this to the public and people

are wanting it and then androids trying

to copy it which I also think is

ridiculous so it’s great that they’re

making it smaller I hope that in a

couple of years they can just completely

eliminate any kind of knotch

let me tell you as a game developer it’s

a little bit of a nightmare I make games

for the iPhone and for the Android and

it’s frustrating that all of these

screens are different sizes and it’s

frustrating that there’s a knotch and so

it’s hopefully something they’ll get rid

of and I think something that shouldn’t

have even been included in the first

place yeah I agree I like the idea of

having more screen space I think that’s

important I thought some of the ways

that people are using the knotch where

they put a black bar across the top and

then make it look like it’s just the

forehead of the phone but you can have

notifications up there I think that’s a

neat way of using it but it really looks

like the different companies aren’t

there or just embracing the notch and

just putting the wallpaper all the way

up and I agree with you it’s it’s a

little bit painful to see so the tear

drop what we’re seeing from oneplus

looks like a good compromise but it

would sure be great if we can get a spat

and and remove notches all together

the other thing I wanted to talk about

is the fingerprint sensor I’m not sure

about your phones but my phone already

doesn’t work the finger really sir yeah

it worked for about eight months and

then just one day it stopped working and

when I asked about it at the Apple

support they just said sometimes it just

stops working and and I’m not gonna buy

a new phone and so I like the idea of

being able to put your finger anywhere

on the screen instead of yet one spot

because then hopefully it’ll be able to

work in the future I mean I love what

what Apple wants to do eventually make

just one sheet of glass as a phone

without any buttons without any spots

that are you know more sensitive than

others no holes to plug things in and

I’m hoping that this this fingerprint

sensor being anywhere on the screen will

will make it closer to that one sheet of

glass they’re aiming for absolutely and

you know at first when I I’ve got a

fingerprint sensor on the back but I had

one on the front of my oneplus 2 and it

was lightning fast and the problem with

it being in the back is when I travel

and I tried a lot for work and trying to

unlock the phone and you reach out your

finger and you got to take it out of the

harness that it’s in and get your finger

back behind it to unlock it that way it

also does iris scanning but then you’re

driving and then you find yourself like

it really closing your eyes are on the

road I’m like this is totally dangerous

and we’re over drivers that’s terrible

right I’m sure they have to knock and

lock their phones all the time

especially with foreign people in their

cars strangers right all the time they

probably just leave them unlocked

completely and with my old one plus I

just reached out my finger because the

fingerprint sensor was underneath the

screen on the chin right so in fact

that’s something that the pixel 3 in

pixel three XL I was hoping if they’ve

got that big massive chin might as well

put it to use and put that fingerprint

sensor on the front I’m not sure if they

are or not I believe they’re on the back

for the current version of the pixels

and it just seems like such a waste of

real estate space on the front if you’re

not gonna use it for that hey so do you

play any cross-platform games like to

play for tonight or did you play doom or

quake or Wolfenstein when you were

younger oh of course I played doom quake

and Wolfenstein and all kinds of

multiplayer muds multi-user dimensions

and mord’s and all those fun games

my son Brant plays Fortnight in fact he

plays all kinds of games and the problem

that he has is he has friends with

Xboxes and friends with Playstations and

friends with computers and you guys have

Station right we have a Playstation and

then we have an iMac which by the way

isn’t working right now but the problem

with having an Apple computer is a lot

of the gaming for computers is geared

towards Windows and not every game is

ported to Apple but in any case if he

wants to play with friends that are on

the computer and Friends that are on the

Xbox right now Sony doesn’t let you do

that that’s so frustrating and so only

Xbox allows you to play cross-platform

so you could play with a Nintendo

console or with a with a PC may be

running steam software but Sony’s not

into that at home no in fact Sony CEO

his name is Kenichi royo Shiba I

probably said that completely wrong but

when he was asked about it he says oh

the best experiences offered by

PlayStation 4 so in other words why

would we bother allowing cross-platform

gaming when the best experiences here on

the PlayStation they want you to buy

their product of course now what’s

interesting is they are outselling

Xboxes by quite a bit and so he may have

a point however it drives my son crazy

because he still has quite a few friends

that are on the Xbox and also a lot of

these games could be played on the

Nintendo switch oh yeah the

cross-platform in gaming is the future

and if Samsung isn’t listening to gamers

then I think they’re gonna fall behind

this could be a big mistake for Samsung

I heard for sodium you know honestly a

lot of my friends my age do most

everything on steam they’re not really

doing Playstation or Xbox because they

can build a PC that’s much more powerful

the better video card and then just

running off of steam do you see that a

lot – absolutely yeah steam is very

popular in fact it’s getting popular in

virtual reality as well and I like the

idea because steam can be cross-platform

if some of these consoles will let it be

well let’s talk about

biggest news this week I think there’s

been some leaks on the new iPhone

maybe 10s or XS what have you heard

about that

yeah there have been a few leaks but I

guess what is most important is now we

have a date at that time where we can

watch it be revealed so it’s going to be

released on Wednesday September 12th at

10 a.m. Pacific time right now and I

don’t know about you but in the past I

used to log onto my computer and I’d

live streaming or I’d go to different

websites that are blogging it and I do a

little bit of work and I come over and

see what what’s balay this is great

coming out of Apple now I used to be a

huge Apple fanboy and I wouldn’t say

that I’ve got the same fanaticism that I

used to have in the past but I’m still

very interested to see what they’re

going to release and according to some

of the information that’s coming out of

Cupertino or how do you pronounce that

anyway over there I know you got it yeah

coming out of Cupertino we’ve already

talked about the iPhone XS it’s going to

be a bigger screen there’s going to be

an OLED model there’s gonna be some

cheaper LCD models I’m also interested

to see what the iPad pro is gonna do

it’s been a long time since the iPads

had a remake the rumours now is it’s

gonna have slimmer bezels and that’s

been a big question I’ve always had why

has an Apple slimmed down those bezels

it’s a lot of wasted front page now do

you guys use tablets in your household

you know not as much as we used to so we

used to be an iPhone and iPad home and

then I you know getting a a Windows

laptop the surface pro oh that one’s a

good one it’s fantastic because it can

act as a tablet and it can act as a

laptop and I often use it as both so if

I’m at home and I just want to watch

some Netflix or just do some casual

surfing it’s my tablet if I need to pull

something out and actually do some work

on it then it’s a tiny little laptop but

anyways I haven’t had the need for a new

tablet since I’ve

that laptop for me tablets don’t make a

lot of sense

mostly I can do everything on my phone I

even watch netflix on my phone I mean

why would I need a bigger screen so you

don’t have that desire for a bigger

screen especially for movies and TV

shows not at this point I think when I’m

over 40 I might because then I’ll need

reading glasses and I need a bigger

screen well I am over 40 and I don’t

need reading glasses and I like a nice

big screen when I watch you watch on a

tiny little what’s your phone by that

sir yeah yeah it’s the same as the

iPhone 5 it’s a tiny little screen so I

heard that they have a lift driver found

a prototype of the pixel 3 in his car

yeah that’s actually quite funny because

it happened on the weekend and what I

find interesting is this lift driver

recognized the phone for what it was

that just goes to show how much the

pixel 3xl has been leaked and so he also

took some pictures of the front-to-back

took it out of the case and sent it off

to a website to say hey look a miss I

found a prototype phone but the most

interesting thing about it is nobody

really cares it’s like this phone’s been

leaked so much that it definitely hasn’t

been driving up the hype like people

thought it would for finding such a

sought-after prototype phone in the wild

that’s quite a tech-savvy lift tracker

to be able to recognize a phone like

that I think most people would look at a

phone like that and say oh must be 2 3

years old right yeah

left his phone here oops oh I don’t

recognize this phone oh L might be one

of those weird Android phones but

apparently the lift driver has the

current version of the XL so the pixel –

and obviously knew what he was looking

at when he saw that big giant notch at

the top and and he’s remind our

listeners – one of the reasons why

people really like the pixel 3 is

because it’s great at taking pictures

you know it’s debatable whether it’s

better than the iPhone 10 but I know a

lot of photographers that I talk to

prefer the pixel over Apple phones and

so this new one’s kind of exciting for

that reason so I got a question for you

Dan the fact that there was hardly any

hype is there such a thing as something

being over leaked it just we see it so

much that it loses the excitement I

think it’s kind of the opposite of Apple

right they try to keep everything

hush-hush this is actually kind of

advertisement for them people are

finding out what’s coming out and it’s

really not their fault right that that

it’s leaked but I think it’s creating

some buzz and it’s creating some

excitement and I think it’s actually a

good thing for Google that it’s leaking

well you know oneplus is famous for

their ability to drum up excitement

right before a phone launch and they’re

kind of the ones that started this whole

get the buzz going in the wild and get

it going on the internet and people

talking and excited about it and they

started that through leaks but it’s

gotten to the point where you wonder is

Google leaking this on purpose why is

this the leakiest phone in history like

it’s it’s got to be like oh this lyft

driver just happened to recognize

exactly what he had I mean I’m not

saying that that was a plant but maybe

some of the other leaks were we know

Villeneuve oh yeah could’ve been a setup

lanova did that with their phone they

they put all these crazy rumors that

this phone was going to be amazing and

then it was the most disappointing thing

when we actually saw it get released and

it actually made me dislike Lenovo a

little bit more but at least people

talked about Lenovo where nobody cared

about or even knew that they were still

making phone I’ll tell you what I don’t

like about the pixel phones before we

move on that they really only stay with

Google’s operating systems for about two

to three years and then Google stopped

supporting them and yeah one of the

reasons why I had originally gotten a

Google phone was so that I could try out

the new betas of all of their software

and after about two years they just

dropped me and dumped me so I thought

that was frustrating and Apple seems to

be installing new software on a lot of

their older phones compared to Android

and so that’s that’s a bit of a surprise

to me I like to see a comparison how

long phones are supported because the

biggest problem with Android is that I

believe it really depends on the OEM

manufacturer how long they’re gonna

support it my oneplus 2 I got through

two years of support and then they

stopped updating it but yet if I had a

one plus three they’re going on three

years of support so I it’s really up to

the manufacturer and where they feel is

the the best use for their money for

supporting these older phones I’d really

like to see a comparison because my

experience with Apple is when I had the

old like second version or four they did

get supported much more than two years

maybe three at the most and then it was

just going so slow they stopped

supporting it and then all the sudden

apps stopped working from the app store

so maybe they go a little bit longer I

don’t know I’d like to see that

comparison here’s what I want to know I

hear that there’s some European car

makers releasing electronic competitors

to test what have you heard about that

like is it BMW and Mercedes or who’s

who’s doing that so there’s three that

are being announced this month BMW Audi

and Mercedes are all coming out with

their fully electric competitors to

Tesla now this isn’t the first time

we’ve seen these manufacturers at least

BMW Mercedes have cut out other

all-electric vehicles in the past but

what they really struggled with is they

didn’t have the mileage and the range

that Tesla’s being able to put into

their cars at same thing with the Nissan

Leaf that’s probably one of the more

the all-electric so you’ve got the

Nissan Leaf you’ve got Tesla’s vehicles

and they they just can’t compare with

the range that Tesla’s getting even

these new ones coming out don’t quite

get the same range but they’re at least

getting closer so the question that I’ve

got is 10 these competitors especially

these brands coming out of Europe can

they compete with Tesla and then where

is the advantage that they have over

Tesla because these are hundred-year-old

companies these are companies that have

a huge supply chain and being able to

manufacture parts that can be moved in

and out of vehicles all over the world

but that’s gotta give them some some

savings and being able to bring the cost

of these vehicles down now where they’re

behind the ball is their batteries so

they’re manufacturing and being able to

get a big enough battery and to get the

factory the castle stuff even mega

factories that are putting out giant

batteries made just for their vehicles

but I don’t think it’s going to take too

much longer for these companies

especially BMW Mercedes and Audi they

have large war chests

I feel like Tesla’s overrated as far as

how much its stock price is whereas

these companies are proving Giants with

great quality at least that’s our

perception and here in North America

that these European companies have

better quality so what do you think Dad

do you think they’ve got a chance do you

think they’re gonna chew away at Tesla’s

market for these all electrics there’s

no question that we need competition in

the market if it’s just gonna be Elan

musk making these all-electric cars and

the leaf we’re not gonna get very far

now here in California we used to have a

mandate I believe that it was by 2025

that we needed to really cut back

emissions and electronic cars are part

of that and so you know in order to get

less pollution

on the 405 and all of the freeways down

here I’m hoping that we’ll move in that

direction if it’s just gonna be one or

two car companies and you know the major

public’s not going to pick it up and so

I’m hoping these German cars do start to

do that so we can start seeing less

pollution in the air and you know I

think it would just be neat to have more

technology in our cars I agree so here

are the three vehicles that are being

released this month mercedes-benz has

the yoga SUV I believe they have been

talking about it for a little bit but

they’re actually going to be releasing

it this month and it’s geared towards

Millennials so that’s coming out

howdy has the e-tron SUV that’s supposed

to be launched on September 17th in San

Francisco and then BMW has the vision I

next concept car which is going to be

flown to San Francisco

and is going to be touring around the

same time now here’s something that’s

interesting about these German

manufacturers they’re copying Elon Musk

or perhaps let’s say Silicon Valley

style there instead of showing up in

their crisp suits and walking around

with their white collars they’re now

wearing jeans and sneakers and they’re

trying to look hip and cool and they’re

trying to grab the Millennial crowd

which loves that style that I would

argue started with Steve Jobs and Apple

so not only that but isn’t it

interesting that they’re releasing these

cars in San Francisco or bringing them

to San Francisco to kind of get the buzz

going so what do you think do you think

they’re being copycats or do you think

they can actually bring their own style

to the electric car are they wearing

turtlenecks get people excited about it

you know that’s a lot of great

information that was a great podcast
